BCG - DTaP - cholera - Hib - Hep A - Hep B - influenza - meningococcus - MMR - PCV - pneumococcal - polio - poliomyelitis - rotavirus - rubella - tetanus - varicella -variolinum
BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) is a vaccine against tuberculosis that is prepared from a strain of the attenuated (weakened) live bovine tuberculosis bacillus, Mycobacterium bovis, that has lost its virulence in humans by being specially cultured in an artificial medium for years. The bacilli have retained enough strong antigenicity to become a somewhat effective vaccine for the prevention of human tuberculosis. Recommended for use in the risk of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
DPT - Diphtheria is a disease of the respiratory system. Pertussis is whooping cough. Tetanus is a serious infectious disease of the nervous system that causes severe contraction of the muscles.
DTaP is an acronym for the combined diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine. The "a" denotes the vaccine's acellular pertussis components, distinguishing it from whole-cell, inactivated DTP (aka DTwP) vaccine. The acellular vaccine uses antigenic fragments of the pertussis pathogen to induce immunity.
Cholera - Cholera is a bacterium (Vibrio cholera) that attacks the intestines, causing diarrhea. Transmission to humans occurs through ingesting food or water which is contaminated with cholera vibrios. The major reservoir for cholera was long assumed to be humans themselves, but considerable evidence exists that aquatic environments can serve as reservoirs of the bacteria. Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative bacterium that produces cholera toxin, an enterotoxin, whose action on the mucosal epithelium lining of the small intestine is responsible for the characteristic massive diarrhea of the disease.
Homeopathic treatment of Cholera:
The most important issue is to avoid the effects of severe diarrhoea. A person with cholera can lose twice their weight in fluid in a single day! Homeopathy is highly successful in treating cholera. Give all these remedies in 30c or 200c potency.
CAMPHORA (Camphor)- Give at the very beginning of the illness; keynote is extreme coldness. Cholera with cramps in calves and other muscles, coldness of body, anguish, great weakness and collapse; face pinched and agitated. No thirst; voice husky and weak; numbness, tingling and coldness in limbs. Intense prostration; state of collapse; sudden sinking of strength.
Icy coldness of whole body - yet wants covers off; "Cold as death" yet wants to be uncovered until pains come and then wants to be covered; breath is cold
Burning in stomach; vomiting and purging; rice water stools
Give every 5-10 mins in severe cases, reducing dose on improvement
CUPRUM (Copper)- Keynote is "cramping": in toes, fingers, calves; death-like sensation in stomach
Gurgling noise while drinking; frightful colic with contraction of abdomen
Strong metallic slimy taste of saliva; gushing watery stools; copious vomiting
Cold clammy sweat; cold but not as cold as indicated by camphor
Repeat dose as necessary; Veratrum follows well
VERATRUM ALB (White Hellebore)- Copious sweat, vomiting and purging. Fainting, collapse, coldness, blueness, weakness.
Watery, green, odorless/colorless stools until exhausted; rice water stools. Excessive vomiting, profuse violent retching; cramps in limbs. Cold perspiration on forehead; feels icy cold; face pinched and sunken
Can alternate Cuprum and Veratrum in severe cases
Repeat dose as symptoms require
China Off, China Sulph and China Arsenicum
These are also useful in the treatment of cholera and dehydration through diarrhea. China is useful in treating "debility from profuse exhausting loss of fluids from the body". Take China 200c twice a day for 3 days to treat the effects of dehydration.
Hep A is an infectious disease of the liver caused by Hepatitis A virus in contaminated food or drinking water. The time between infection and the appearance of the symptoms, (the incubation period), is between two and six weeks and the average incubation period is 28 days. Hepatitis A does not have a chronic stage and does not cause permanent liver damage. Following infection, the immune system makes antibodies against the hepatitis A virus that confer immunity against future infection. The disease can be prevented by vaccination.
Hep B An infectious disease of the liver caused by Hepatitis B virus. Hepatitis B virus infection may either be acute (self-limiting) or chronic (long-standing). Persons with self-limiting infection clear the infection spontaneously within weeks to months. Children are less likely than adults to clear the infection. Acute infection with hepatitis B virus is associated with acute viral hepatitis - an illness that begins with general ill-health, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, body aches, mild fever, dark urine, and then progresses to development of jaundice. The infection may be entirely asymptomatic and may go unrecognized.
Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine (Hib vaccine or PRP vaccine is a conjugate vaccine developed for the prevention of invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b bacteria
Influenza - The homeopathic remedy Oscillococcinum is effective against 'flu symptoms if given within 48 hours of the onset. Influenza is a contagious viral infection occurring mainly in winter. It generally has a sudden onset, with fever, chills, aching muscles, headache, backache, sore throat and cough. For most people, it is a self-limiting acute illness with symptoms lasting up to a week. People particularly susceptible to complications of influenza include the very young and the very old, and those with an existing chronic illness. Secondary bacterial infections such as pneumonia can occur in those with weakened immune systems. ACONITE 30c or 200c

Menningococcinum
Inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. Otherwise known as Neisseria Meningitidis, Meningococcus is a bacterium that in humans lives in the nostrils and at the back of the throat.
It is spread by coughing and sneezing. Meningitis occurs when meningococcus bacteria leave the nose or throat and become established in the brain or spinal cord. The biggest factor determining whether or not the meningococcus will invade another part of your body is the state of your immune system.
Homeopathic Treatment of Meningitis
Hospital treatment is essential.
Diagnosis is by lumbar puncture in hospital.
Conventional treatment uses antibiotics.
Prompt action is vital.
Progress of the disease can be insidious, with misleadingly mild symptoms. Deterioration can be very rapid - possibly within hours - especially with meningococci. Give these remedies in 30c or 200c potency on the way to hospital. Frequent repetition is necessary if symptoms are severe.
Aconite (Monk's Hood)
This is a major remedy in inflammation and fevers. Use when the symptoms are acute, sudden, or violent. There may be fear, anxiety, anguish of mind and body. This is the remedy to think of at the first symptoms of fever or 'flu-like illness.
Belladonna (Deadly Nightshade) - Use this after Aconite, when the symptoms are sudden and violent, such as:
Burning heat, high fever; hot head, cold limbs; skin flushed, red; dilated pupils. Throbbing carotids; throbbing, hammering headaches.Delirium, hallucinations, frightful visions on closing eyes; semi-stupor.
Starts, jerks, spasms, shocks, twitchings; convulsions.
Sensitive to light, noise or movement.
Apis (Bee Sting)- Great anxiety and restlessness. Also great inclination to sleep. Puffy eyelids and face. Extreme sensitivity to touch. Sudden shrill piercing screams (meningeal irritation).Rolling of head from side to side; boring of head backwards into pillow.Burning heat; feels much worse for heat of room, heat of bed, hot drinks.
MMR Measles, mumps, rubella viruses
Homeopathic Treatment of Measles
The measles virus enters the body through the nose and mouth. It incubates, often silently, for up to 14 days in the lymph system, liver, spleen, bone marrow and blood. Thus the natural disease involves a massive effort from the entire immune system. Vaccination weakens this natural immune response, and children become more susceptible to breathing difficulties, asthma, eczema, allergies and glue ear. Use remedies in 6c or 30c dose and repeat every 1 or 2 hours. Stop as soon as symptoms improve. It is best to consult a professional homeopath for further advice and support.
Aconite: Use in first 24 hours of illness, when cold and fever symptoms start. Sudden onset; high fever; red eyes; restlessness, anxiety, fear; dry barking cough like croup.
Belladonna: High fever with bright red face; radiating heat; red eyes; throbbing headache; dilated pupils; painful throat; may be delirious.
Euphrasia: Painful burning, watery eyes; redness around eyes; sensitive to light; bland discharge from nose.
Sulphur: Terribly irritating rash; worse for heat of bed or a bath. Give if rash slow to come out. Itching worse for scratching. MEASLES IS LESS SERIOUS WHEN FULLY EXPRESSED ONTO THE SKIN.
Pulsatilla: Weepy, clingy; not thirsty; earache; dry cough at night, loose in morning. Craves fresh air. Thick bland yellow/green nasal discharge.
Gelsemium: Slow onset - the illness takes days to emerge and the child feels increasingly weak. Lethargic and exhausted with generalised shivering and aching. Heavy eyelids.
Bryonia: Very dry, tiresome cough; high temperature; headache worse for the slightest movement; dry mouth; intense thirst.
Kali Bic: Mucus difficult to cough up or blow out; swollen neck glands; thick stringy rope-like yellow-green mucus. The virus is expelled via the same route as it came into the body, so a cough is a natural part of the healing process.
Apis: High temperature, very hot; wants covers off; eyes sore, tearful and irritable; stinging, burning rash soothed by anything cool; rosy-red waterlogged rash; general swelling of face; eyes with water bag appearance.
In many cases, Morbillinum 30c (one dose) will clear any after-effects of measles.
Homeopathic Treatment of Mumps
Homeopathic treatment for mumps
Belladonna 6c or 30c: 3 doses in 24 hours; bright red and shiny swelling on right side with burning pain in throat; shooting pain in glands; dazed, delirious; use early in the illness for a very high temperature.
Bryonia 6c or 30c; very dry mouth and lips; great thirst; very irritable; worse for any movement, especially turning head; may be constipated and complain of a headache.
Lachesis 6c or 30c; swelling worse on left side, moving to right; throat and swollen glands worse for any sort of touch or pressure; easier to swallow food than saliva on its own; symptoms much worse on waking from sleep.
Lycopodium 6c or 30c; swelling which begins on right side and moves to left; better for warm drinks; generally worse around 4pm.
Merc. Sol. 30c three times a day for 1 or 2 days; use where there is very smelly breath, increased saliva and heavily-coated tongue; heavy sweats and exhaustion; use towards the end of the illness once the fever has subsided.
Phytolacca 6c or 30c; glands hard and stony; pains shoot into ears on swallowing; throat dry and rough; right side more affected than the left.
Pulsatilla 6c or 30c; for breast tenderness or when symptoms progress to ovaries or testicles; thirstlessness; craving for fresh air; aggravated by overheating; tearful and wants company.
Rhus Tox 6c or 30c; for painful, swollen glands; may have cold sores on lips; there is great restlessness which is worse at night from aching in limbs.
Parotidium 30c is the prophylaxis and can be given to adults who have not had mumps but are exposed to it (i.e., children in the family contract the illness). One dose on contact and one a week for two further weeks.
PCV - Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine To protect infants and young children against disease caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. This is a pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, introduced in 1983. This contains 23 strains of pneumococcus, and is used for adults and children over 2 years
Polio - Poliomyletis virus An acute viral infectious disease spread from person to person. Sympoms: Headache and general malaise; gastro-intestinal disturbance (i.e. diarrhoea, vomiting); sore throat; stiffness of neck and back; aching muscles. From day 4 or 5, a 36-hour development period of muscle paralysis may commence. Coughing, swallowing or speech may be affected. As with any disease, susceptibility is the key.
Rotavirus Severe diarrhea among infants and young children.
Rubella German Measles - Rubella (German Measles) is a mild childhood illness characterised by a rash, nasal discharge and fever. It is air-borne, spread by sneezing and coughing. The incubation period is 2-3 weeks, but the person is infectious for the period from one before and four days after the rash appears. It commonly affects children from age 6 to young adulthood, but the incidence of Rubella has shifted to older age groups since the introduction of the Rubella vaccination programme. Rubella was made a notifiable disease in 1988 when the Rubella vaccine was combined with the Measles/Mumps vaccine into the MMR.
Symptoms of Rubella
Rubella begins with malaise and fever. After 2 or 3 days, the faint pink rash appears, which is almost flat to touch. It starts behind the ears, spreads to the face and then moves down the body. After 4 days, the skin dries and flakes off.
Symptoms can be similar to mild 'flu: headache, stiff muscles, runny nose - especially when the rash is poorly developed.
Glands are swollen at the back of the neck, just below the hairline.
In adults there can also be arthritis and arthralgia (pain in joints).
Homeopathic Remedies for Rubella
Generally German Measles is a mild illness not requiring any treatment. However, if your child is feverish and unhappy you can give a few dose of:
ACONITE 30c - give in early stages of the illness, before the rash appears; may have dry croupy cough which is worse at night.
BELLADONNA 30c - for high temperature; red, hot, dry skin; muscles may twitch and jerk in sleep.
PULSATILLA 30c - lower temperature; child weepy and wants lots of cuddles; yellow/green mucus from nose.
SULPHUR 30c - if the illness lingers; or if the rash fails to come out; green mucus from nose. [During childhood, many children acquire an undiagnosed viral rash. Rubella may be so mild that it is not recognised. It is always a good idea to give Sulphur 30c during the first 12 hours of a childhood rash to help the body fully express the illness onto the skin.]
Tetanus - A medical condition that is characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fiber. The main symptoms of tetanus are muscular spasms starting in the jaw, causing difficulty in opening the mouth - Lockjaw. The spasms then spread to other muscles. The neck and back become stiff and arched, and the abdomen hard like a board. It is the spasms of the respiratory muscles that can cause difficulty breathing, and eventually death. Orthodox treatment includes sedation, muscle relaxants, antibiotics and large doses of tetanus antitoxin.
The incubation period for the disease varies from one day to three weeks, although the usual range is between one and two weeks. There are usually no other symptoms before the muscle stiffness begins.
Staphylococcus aureus - Staph infection. The clostridium tetani bacilli are spore-forming organisms commonly present in the intestinal tracts of farm animals, horses and any manure-treated soil. The spores are highly weather-resistant, and can survive in soil for decades. Tetanus bacilli will enter the body through a deeply penetrating burn or wound, e.g. from a nail or crush injury. Wounds may appear insignificant, although deeper structures may be injured. The danger of tetanus arises from the fact that tetanus bacilli are ANAEROBIC, i.e. they can only multiply in the absence of oxygen. Tetanus is not spread from person to person.
MRSA Methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus is a resistant variation of the common bacterium Staphylococcus aureus.
Streptococcus pneumoniae - Bacteria causing pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis media, meningitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis.
Varicella zoster virus – chicken pox Chicken Pox is a generally mild viral infection arising from Varicella Zoster, a member of the Herpes family. It is spread by droplets from the nose or throat. Managing the infection develops permanent immunity. Because chicken pox is so common in childhood, 90% of adults are immune. It can take two weeks after exposure before the first signs develop. Subsequent infections with Varicella in later life may result in shingles and is much more likely if the child has had only a very few spots. It is vital to encourage the spots to come out. When the disease is fully expressed onto the skin, the child is more likely to make a full and uncomplicated recovery. Give 3 doses of Sulphur 30c in the first 12 hours, to encourage the disease onto the skin.
The main stage (lasts 7-10 days):
Starts with a mild temperature, headache and runny nose
Small pink spots appear, which then fill with fluid to make blisters
The spots appear in crops over several days
The blisters are very itchy
The blisters open up and then crust over within 2-3 days
The spots are infectious until they dry up
The main treatment for children is trying to stop them from scratching the spots. If the blisters pop early, they can become infected with normal skin bacteria and the secondary infection may cause more scarring.
IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO GIVE ASPIRIN TO A CHILD WITH CHICKEN POX, AS IT MAY CAUSE THEM TO DEVELOP REYE'S SYNDROME.
Variolinum virus - smallpox
